Social Security disability

Disability benefits in Utah

Social Security rules are the same in every state. This page covers what is different in Utah: who decides your claim, state money added to SSI, Medicaid, hearings and free help.

You have 60 days to appeal each decision, plus 5 days for mail.

Who decides your claim in Utah?

Disability Determination Services (DDS)

This state office decides if you meet Social Security's medical rules for disability (SSDI and SSI). It is only responsible for the medical part of your claim. Social Security checks the other rules, like work credits and income.

Does Utah add money to SSI?

Fifteen Dollar State Supplemental Payment (SSP)

Utah's state supplement is only for people who get SSI, are on Utah Medicaid, and live in a medical institution such as a nursing home where Social Security limits SSI to $30 a month. Other SSI recipients do not get a Utah state supplement.

Paid by: the state

The total uses the federal SSI amount for that living arrangement. For people living on their own, the federal SSI part is $994 a month for one person or $1,491 for a couple in 2026. In another person's household or in a medical facility it is less.

How to apply
You do not need to apply. The state pays the $15 automatically when you meet the rules.

Medicaid for working people with disabilities: Medicaid Work Incentive (MWI)

MWI is Medicaid for people who meet Social Security's disability rules and have earned income. Your household income must be under 250% of the federal poverty level. If your household net income is at or under 100% of the poverty level, you pay no premium. Above that, you pay a monthly premium.
