Social Security disability

Disability benefits in Arizona

Social Security rules are the same in every state. This page covers what is different in Arizona: who decides your claim, state money added to SSI, Medicaid, hearings and free help.

You have 60 days to appeal each decision, plus 5 days for mail.

Who decides your claim in Arizona?

Disability Determination Services Administration (DDSA)

This state office decides the medical part of your Social Security disability claim. Social Security checks the other rules, like work credits and income. Arizona's Medicaid agency (AHCCCS) also uses DDSA to decide if someone is blind or disabled for its Freedom to Work program.

Does Arizona add money to SSI?

Arizona does not add extra state money to SSI for people who apply now. Arizona law has a state payment only for people who already got Arizona aid for the aged, blind or disabled in December 1973.

Medicaid in Arizona

Arizona's Medicaid program is called AHCCCS. If you get SSI, you get AHCCCS. You do not need a separate AHCCCS application.

Medicaid for working people with disabilities: AHCCCS Freedom to Work

Freedom to Work gives AHCCCS coverage to people with disabilities who work. You must be 16 to 64, live in Arizona, be working and paying taxes, and get Social Security disability or be found blind or disabled by DDSA. You must not be eligible for any other AHCCCS program. Your countable monthly earned income must be under $3,325.00 (only about half of your earnings count). AHCCCS does not count your family's income or unearned income like Social Security. Assets are not counted. The premium is up to $35.00 a month. To apply, call the Freedom to Work Unit: 602-417-6677 in Maricopa County, or 1-800-654-8713 (option 6) statewide.
