Social Security disability

Disability benefits in Idaho

Social Security rules are the same in every state. This page covers what is different in Idaho: who decides your claim, state money added to SSI, Medicaid, hearings and free help.

You have 60 days to appeal each decision, plus 5 days for mail.

Who decides your claim in Idaho?

Idaho Disability Determinations Service (DDS)

This state office decides the medical part of SSDI and SSI disability claims for people in Idaho. You do not apply to DDS. Social Security offices send your claim to DDS. Social Security checks the other rules, like work credits and income.

How long a decision takes depends partly on how fast your doctors send records and whether DDS needs to send you for a medical exam. Call DDS if you have a new phone number or address, see a new doctor, have upcoming medical appointments, or go back to work.

Does Idaho add money to SSI?

Aid to the Aged, Blind, and Disabled (AABD) cash assistance

Idaho pays a small monthly AABD cash payment to some people who get SSI and are 65 or older, blind, or disabled. You must get an SSI payment for the month. The amount depends on where you live, your income and your resources. People in residential assisted living facilities or certified family homes do not get AABD cash.

Paid by: the state

WhoState partTotal per month with SSIEffective
Single person (living alone, with an ineligible spouse, with another participant, or in another's household) - maximum$53$1,047July 1, 2024
Couple (both getting AABD) - maximum$20$1,511July 1, 2024
Person in a room and board home - maximum$198$1,192July 1, 2024
Person in a semi-independent group residential facility (SIGRIF) - maximum$169$1,163July 1, 2024

The total uses the federal SSI amount for that living arrangement. For people living on their own, the federal SSI part is $994 a month for one person or $1,491 for a couple in 2026. In another person's household or in a medical facility it is less.

Medicaid for working people with disabilities: Medicaid for Workers with Disabilities (MWD)

MWD is Medicaid for people with a disability who work or are self-employed. You must have a disability under Social Security's rules, be 16 to 64 years old, live in Idaho, and meet income and resource limits. In 2026, the resource limit is $10,000 for one person ($15,000 for a couple). There is no premium if your income is up to 133% of the poverty level ($1,789 a month for one person). Above that, premiums are $10 to $200 a month for one person, up to 500% of the poverty level. You get the Medicaid Enhanced Plan. Apply for Medicaid and mark that you are interested in MWD.
