Disability benefits in Nevada

Social Security rules are the same in every state. This page covers what is different in Nevada: who decides your claim, state money added to SSI, Medicaid, hearings and free help.

You have 60 days to appeal each decision, plus 5 days for mail.

Who decides your claim in Nevada?

Bureau of Disability Adjudication (BDA)

The Bureau of Disability Adjudication (BDA) makes the medical decision on SSDI and SSI claims for Social Security. It asks your doctors, hospitals and clinics for your records, at no cost to you. It sends you a letter with the name and direct contact of the adjudicator who handles your claim.

If more information is needed, BDA may set up an exam or test and pay for it. BDA may also pay back some travel costs for this appointment at a set rate.

Does Nevada add money to SSI?

Nevada State Supplementary Payment (for aged and blind SSI recipients only)

Nevada's state supplement is only for SSI recipients who are 65 or older or blind. People who get SSI because of a disability (and are not blind or 65+) do not get a Nevada state supplement.

Paid by: Social Security, together with your SSI payment

WhoState partTotal per month with SSIEffective
Aged person (65+) living in their own household$36.40$1,030.40January 1, 2026
Blind person living in their own household (or blind child in a parent's household)$109.30$1,103.30January 1, 2026
Aged or blind person in state-certified domiciliary (group) care$391$1,385January 1, 2026
Blind person living in the household of another (federal one-third reduction)$213.96$876.63January 1, 2026
Aged person living in the household of another (federal one-third reduction)$24.27$686.94January 1, 2026
Blind couple (both blind) living independently$374.60$1,865.60January 1, 2026

The total uses the federal SSI amount for that living arrangement. For people living on their own, the federal SSI part is $994 a month for one person or $1,491 for a couple in 2026. In another person's household or in a medical facility it is less.

How to apply
You do not need a separate application. Social Security checks you for the state supplement when you apply for SSI and pays it with your SSI.

Medicaid in Nevada

Nevada Medicaid does not start automatically when you get SSI. You must apply to the state (Division of Social Services) through Access Nevada or with a paper application. Nevada uses SSI rules for its Medical Assistance to the Aged, Blind and Disabled (MAABD) groups, and SSI recipients are one of those groups.

Medicaid for working people with disabilities: Health Insurance for Work Advancement (HIWA)

HIWA is a Medicaid option for people with disabilities who work. It lets you work, earn money and keep health coverage. You must be employed, live in Nevada, and have been found disabled by Social Security (now or in the past). There is a resource limit and a monthly premium. If you lose your job through no fault of your own, you can stay on HIWA for 3 more months if you keep paying premiums. Apply through the Division of Social Services.
