Social Security disability

Disability benefits in Massachusetts

Social Security rules are the same in every state. This page covers what is different in Massachusetts: who decides your claim, state money added to SSI, Medicaid, hearings and free help.

You have 60 days to appeal each decision, plus 5 days for mail.

Who decides your claim in Massachusetts?

MassAbility Disability Determination Services (DDS)

This state office decides the medical part of your Social Security disability (SSDI) or SSI claim. Social Security checks the other rules, like work credits and income. You apply with Social Security, not with DDS. For an update on your case, call the disability examiner named in the first letter DDS sent you.

Does Massachusetts add money to SSI?

State Supplement Program (SSP)

Massachusetts adds a state payment to SSI for people who get SSI because of age, blindness or disability. Some people who do not get SSI only because their income is a little too high can also get it. The amount depends on your category (aged, blind or disabled), where you live, and whether you are single or part of a couple.

Paid by: the state

WhoState partTotal per month with SSIEffective
Disabled individual, full cost of living (lives alone or only with spouse/children)$114.39$1,108.39January 1, 2026
Disabled individual, shared living expenses$30.40$1,024.40January 1, 2026
Each member of a disabled couple, full cost of living$90.03$835.53January 1, 2026
Disabled individual living in the household of another$87.58$750.25January 1, 2026
Disabled individual in certified assisted living$454$1,448January 1, 2026
Individual in a Medicaid facility (personal needs)$42.80$72.80January 1, 2026

The total uses the federal SSI amount for that living arrangement. For people living on their own, the federal SSI part is $994 a month for one person or $1,491 for a couple in 2026. In another person's household or in a medical facility it is less.

How to apply
You do not need a separate application. Your SSI application with Social Security is also your SSP application. The state decides SSP after Social Security decides your SSI claim. The Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) pays SSP for aged and disabled people. The Massachusetts Commission for the Blind handles SSP for blind people.
