How to claim in Kentucky
Search your name for free on the Treasury's search portal or at MissingMoney.com. Check family, friends, your business and your employer too.
If the name and address match you, request a claim form online.
Fill out the claim form and sign it by hand. Kentucky needs your original signature: faxed, scanned, emailed or photocopied signatures are not accepted.
Attach the proof listed in Section D of your claim form (ID, Social Security number proof, and proof of the reported address).
Mail it to the Unclaimed Property Division. You can send several claim forms in one envelope with one set of proof, or drop them off in Frankfort on weekdays, 8 AM to 4 PM.
Documents you may need
- Copy of a government-issued photo ID for each person signing
- Proof of Social Security number (Social Security card, W-2, tax return or other official document showing name and SSN)
- Original signed claim form
- Proof you lived or got mail at the reported address, if it is not your current address (for example a utility bill, bank statement, lease, old driver's license, or a postmarked envelope)
- If no address was reported: proof you did business with the reporting company before the year it was reported
- If your name changed: marriage certificate, divorce papers or other court document
Money owed to a relative who died
Only the executor or administrator, or next of kin, can claim for someone who died. Send the owner's death certificate and proof of the owner's SSN. If an estate is open, send your court appointment (received within 60 days of issue). If it is closed, send the appointment and the final order of distribution. If there was no estate, staff will tell you what else is needed.

Finder fees in Kentucky
We found no percentage cap or waiting period on finder fees in Kentucky's unclaimed property law. The law lets you name a locator as your agent in a signed record, and the state then shares your property information with that agent. A finder filing for you must send the owner's SSN proof and the finder agreement with an addendum. The Treasury says you do not need a finder and should try to claim on your own first.
Law: KRS 393A.760
Watch out: The Treasury will never ask for your credit card or bank information. Don't pay any website or company to search for or claim your property; the search is free.
Good to know
- Approved claims are paid by mailed check only, with no direct deposit.
- Your payment can be taken to pay a debt you owe a federal, state or local agency. A $0 check means the money was intercepted for a debt; the check stub says which agency to call.
- The Treasury does not issue 1099 tax forms for unclaimed property payments.
