How to claim in Kansas
Search your name at MissingMoney.KS.gov. Also check maiden names, former names, family members and old business names.
Select the items that are yours, review them, and click FILE CLAIM.
Enter your legal name and your current mailing address. Your check goes to that address. Sign with your full legal name and submit to get a claim number.
Read the email you receive. Its claim form lists exactly what proof you need.
Upload documents through the secure portal or mail them. Kansas does not accept claims or documents by fax or email. Notarized papers and original death certificates must be mailed.
Check your claim status online with your claim ID.
No automatic payment program was found. The state does match its records with the Department of Revenue and mails outreach letters, but you still need to file a claim online or call to start one.
Documents you may need
- Completed and signed claim form
- Copy of a photo ID
- A legal document showing your Social Security number
- Proof you lived at the address on file (for example an old utility bill, bank statement, tax record or old driver's license)
- If no address is listed: proof you did business with the company that reported it (policy, uncashed check, bank statement)
- If your name changed: marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order
Money owed to a relative who died
You must show your legal right or relationship to the person who died, for example an obituary listing survivors, or Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration naming you. With no valid will or trust, Kansas follows its intestate succession laws and pays each heir directly. The site offers a family tree template for estates that were not probated.

Finder fees in Kansas
Any agreement to pay someone to recover property is unenforceable if made within 24 months after the property was turned over to the state. After 24 months, the agreement is unenforceable if the fee is more than 15% of the property's value. The state may pay the owner or heir directly, not the finder.
Law: K.S.A. 58-3968
Watch out: The Treasurer's office never charges a fee; anyone asking for a fee to help you claim is not from the State Treasurer's Office.
