Renters' rights

You rent your home: getting a security deposit back, repairs, eviction notices and rent rules, with free letters.

What it is

Renters' rights are set mostly by state law, and some cities add their own: how big a security deposit can be and how fast it must come back, what the landlord must repair and how to ask, how much notice comes before an eviction case, and when the landlord may enter. Many disputes over a deposit end in small claims court.

Who it helps

  • Renters who didn't get a deposit back
  • Renters living with mold, leaks, no heat or other repairs
  • Renters who got an eviction notice or a rent increase
  • Renters in cities with rent control
