Property tax exemptions
You own and live in your home: homestead, senior, veteran and disability breaks, and how to apply.
What it is
Most states lower the property tax on the home you own and live in through a homestead exemption, and add breaks for seniors, veterans, people with disabilities and surviving spouses. They are rarely automatic: you apply to the local assessor by a deadline, and some breaks must be renewed.
Who it helps
- Homeowners who live in their home
- Owners 65 or older
- Veterans with a disability rating and surviving spouses
- Owners with a disability or a low income
