Alabama property tax appeals by county
Each of Alabama's 67 counties has an assessing official who values homes. Depending on the county, the office is called the Revenue Commissioner, the Tax Assessor, or (in Shelby County) the Property Tax Commissioner. The county Board of Equalization (a board that hears appeals and evens out values between homes) hears protests. The Alabama Department of Revenue supervises the counties but does not hear homeowner appeals; the next step after the county board is circuit court.
